Knowledge Regarding Armature Winding
In electrical engineering, the armature is the winding (or set of windings) of an electric machine which carries AC or DC current.
Armature winding is the process of winding insulated wire coils into the the armature slots of an electric machine, such as a motor or generator. The armature is the rotating part of the machine that carries current.
How it works
- The armature winding allows current to flow through it when powered.
- The armature winding generates a magnetic field that produces torque.
- The armature winding interacts with the magnetic field in the air-gap.
Types of armature winding
- Lap winding: The successive coils overlap each other.
- Wave winding: A conductor under one pole is connected to a conductor under the next pole of opposite polarity.
Where it’s used
- Armature winding is an important part of the construction of DC machines.
- The armature can be on either the rotor (rotating part) or the stator (stationary part)
